Sharman King | Founder & President, Book Warehouse

Sharman King (BMus UBC 1970) is the founder and President of Book Warehouse, a well-known and highly successful chain of discount book stores established in 1980. Under his leadership, the company has grown to become a dominant multi-store bookseller in the Greater Vancouver area.

Mr. King is active as a performing professional musician in studios and theatres and until 1991 was on the Music faculties of UBC and Capilano College. He is currently bass trombonist of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and was previously bass trombonist of both the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and the CBC Vancouver Orchestra. Mr. King was a member of the famed Buddy Rich Orchestra and has been privileged to perform with Diana Krall, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Paul Anka, Jack Jones, Tom Jones, Ray Charles, Burt Bacharach and Luciano Pavarotti.

In addition to MusicFest Vancouver, Sharman serves on the boards of the Downtown Vancouver Association, Vancouver Musicians’ Association, National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Composers’ Jazz Orchestra Society, President’s Advisory Committee on the UBC Library, British Columbia Book Prizes, and the Music Advisory Committees of both Vancouver Community College and Douglas College. He is currently participating in the Vancouver Opera finance committee and is a voting member of both the National Academy of Recorded Arts and Sciences and the Canadian Music Centre. Mr. King also provides guidance and support to numerous charitable and non-profit agencies, and youth music programs.
